The best horror movies, by what you actually want from one
Every “best horror movies” list is a ranking of somebody’s taste, and the ranking is the least useful part of it. The question behind the search is almost never which film is objectively finest; it is what should I put on tonight, and the answer depends entirely on what frightens you. So this is not a ranked list. It is ten groups, each one a different answer to that question, drawn from the 61 horror films we have scored and reviewed.
The pick is editorial — ours, and we will defend it. The number beside each title is not: it is that film’s measured score on the axis the group is built around, against a published rubric, and the build refuses to publish a group whose films do not actually sit where the heading says they do.

If you have never really watched horror
The place to start is not the most extreme thing in the index, it is the film that shows you what the genre can do without spending your goodwill. All four of these are restrained on viscera by modern standards and none of them is at the punishing end of tone, which is the combination that makes a first horror film a second one.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Viscera |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halloween | 1978 | The blueprint. Widescreen suburbia, a white mask, and enormous patience. | 022 |
| Alien | 1979 | Working people in a haunted house that happens to be a spaceship. | 062 |
| The Shining | 1980 | A hotel doing slow arithmetic on a family. The dread is architectural. | 030 |
| Get Out | 2017 | The most frightening thing in it is a polite conversation. | 042 |
If you want dread rather than shock
The low end of pace of fear is where horror stops happening to you and starts accumulating around you. Nothing jumps out. You are given time to work out what is going to happen, and then it takes its time.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Pace of Fear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Mungo | 2008 | A mock-documentary about grief that hides its worst image in plain sight. | 006 |
| Rosemary's Baby | 1968 | Nobody believes her, and everybody is in on it. Paranoia as pregnancy. | 014 |
| The Witch | 2015 | Period-accurate misery and a goat. The family destroys itself first. | 018 |
| It Follows | 2014 | A rule you can't argue with, walking toward you at a constant speed. | 026 |
If you want it relentless
The opposite end of the same axis, and it frightens a different person. Incident, escalation, very little air. If held silence does nothing for you and you want the thing to keep moving, start here.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Pace of Fear |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 Days Later | 2002 | Shot on video, running flat out. The soldiers are the third act. | 076 |
| The Descent | 2005 | Claustrophobia first, creatures second. The cave was already enough. | 074 |
| Evil Dead | 2013 | A remake that answered the original's slapstick with sincerity and blood. | 078 |
| Smile | 2022 | A curse that spreads by witness. Meaner than the marketing let on. | 072 |
If you cannot stand being shown things
The most misread axis in the index. Explicit is not a synonym for frightening, and the least explicit films we hold are among the worst things in it. Every one of these works by implication — you will not be shown an injury.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Viscera |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Blair Witch Project | 1999 | Three people get lost and the woods do the rest. Almost nothing is shown. | 006 |
| Rosemary's Baby | 1968 | Nobody believes her, and everybody is in on it. Paranoia as pregnancy. | 010 |
| Ringu | 1998 | A curse that spreads like media, because it is media. | 022 |
| Psycho | 1960 | The most famous murder in cinema and the knife never once touches skin. | 018 |
If what frightens you is a person, not a ghost
At the top of the threat axis there is nothing supernatural left: the danger is entirely human, and everything in it is available to anybody. Frightening for the exact opposite reason a ghost is.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | The Threat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Psycho | 1960 | The most famous murder in cinema and the knife never once touches skin. | 096 |
| The Texas Chain Saw Massacre | 1974 | 16mm heat and grime. Feels found rather than filmed, which is the trick. | 092 |
| Audition | 1999 | A romance for ninety minutes. Then a very long ten. | 090 |
| Get Out | 2017 | The most frightening thing in it is a polite conversation. | 088 |
If you want to be genuinely upset
The bleak floor of tone is the one place in this rubric where a more extreme number does mean harder to endure. Nothing is redeemed and nobody is saved. We are not recommending these lightly and the first one on the list is the hardest watch in the index.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Martyrs | 2008 | New French Extremity at its most punishing. There is no relief anywhere in it. | 003 |
| Hereditary | 2018 | Grief that curdles into something much older. Slow, then unsurvivable. | 008 |
| The Witch | 2015 | Period-accurate misery and a goat. The family destroys itself first. | 008 |
| Don't Look Now | 1973 | Grief edited like a premonition. The ending is a knife. | 010 |
If you want the room to stop making sense
The top of reality anchor is horror that will not hold still: impossible geography, time that does not run forwards, images that mean something the film declines to say. There is nothing to orient against, which is the point.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Reality Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Possession | 1981 | A divorce film that becomes something unspeakable in a Berlin stairwell. | 092 |
| Videodrome | 1983 | Long live the new flesh. Analog horror's founding document. | 090 |
| Suspiria | 1977 | Colour used as violence. A ballet school run by witches, scored by Goblin. | 088 |
| Jacob's Ladder | 1990 | Grief refusing to resolve. Every corridor is the same corridor. | 086 |
If grain and hiss are half the fear
The analog floor of era bias, which scores texture rather than release date. These look recovered rather than made, and for a great many viewers that is the single most reliable route to unease.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Era Bias |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Texas Chain Saw Massacre | 1974 | 16mm heat and grime. Feels found rather than filmed, which is the trick. | 004 |
| Night of the Living Dead | 1968 | The dead are the least of it. The living argue the house down. | 004 |
| The Exorcist | 1973 | Faith tested to destruction in a child's bedroom. Still nasty. | 008 |
| Don't Look Now | 1973 | Grief edited like a premonition. The ending is a knife. | 008 |
If you want it to be funny as well
Comedy horror has to be horror comedy or it is just a comedy with a monster in it, and measured tone is the test: above the midpoint the work is enjoying itself, below it the work is punishing you. Only two films in this index are properly having a good time, and both are genuinely frightening as well, which is harder to build than either half alone. That is a thin showing and it is a gap in the index rather than a verdict on the subgenre — which is also why we do not currently publish a ranked list of the funniest, and say so there.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-Animator | 1985 | Splatter comedy, gleeful and disgusting. Herbert West simply does not stop. | 092 |
| Scream | 1996 | The slasher explains itself while committing itself. Still the sharpest of them. | 072 |
If you want something from this decade
Everything we have scored from 2020 onwards. A short list on purpose — the index is deepest in the decades that have finished — and the four of them disagree with each other about almost everything, which is a fair picture of where the genre currently is.
| Title | Year | Why it is here | Era Bias |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skinamarink | 2022 | Ninety minutes of a dark house and a child’s logic. Divisive entirely on purpose. | 096 |
| Smile | 2022 | A curse that spreads by witness. Meaner than the marketing let on. | 092 |
| Talk to Me | 2022 | Possession as a party trick, then as a consequence. | 092 |
| Terrifier 2 | 2022 | The most explicit thing in the index. People walked out and told everyone. | 084 |
What this page is not
It is not a ranking, and it is not an answer to what is the scariest horror film either — that is a different question with a different answer, and it has its own page. Five of our six axes measure a kind of fear rather than an amount, so there is no single scale that any of this could be sorted on.
It is also not the whole index. 31 of 61 horror films are named here, chosen because they are the clearest example of something, not because the other 30 are worse. If you want the whole shelf it is in the film index, and if you want it sorted by a single axis rather than grouped by intent, that is what the ranked lists are for.
Questions about the best horror movies
What is the best horror movie?
We do not publish a single answer, because the question is not really about quality — it is about what frightens you, and the honest versions of it diverge. The film we hand to somebody who has not watched much horror is Halloween. The one we would not hand to anybody without a warning is Martyrs, at 003 on tone. Both are on this page, in different groups, which is the point of grouping it.
Is this ranked, and where is the number one?
There is no number one and the groups are in no particular order. A ranked top ten of horror movies is one person's taste wearing the costume of a fact, and the ordering is the least useful thing on the page: nobody searching this wants to know which movie is finest, they want to know what to watch. So the page splits into 10 different answers instead and tells you which question each one answers.
Are these picks based on reviews, ratings or votes?
None of the three. No rating from any outside source appears anywhere on this site — not an aggregate, not a user score, not a star. We score every work ourselves on six continuous axes against fixed anchor works, and the selection on this page is our own editorial judgement, labelled as such. What is not a judgement is the number beside each title: that is the measurement the group is built on, and the build fails if a pick stops satisfying its own heading.
What is the best horror movie if you scare easily?
Work from the group headed If you cannot stand being shown things rather than from a ranking. Everything in it scores under 025 on viscera, so you will not be shown an injury, and the fear is built by implication. The Blair Witch Project scores 006 and is the gentlest thing on it by that measure. Restraint is not the same as mildness, though — several of the least explicit things in this index are the worst of them.
How many horror movies did you choose from?
61, every one of them scored on six axes and carrying a full review with its ending explained. 31 appear on this page across 10 groups, and a movie can appear in more than one group because being extreme on two axes at once is common. The rest are in the full index and sorted one axis at a time in the ranked lists.
Or let the machine choose: rate a few things and it ranks the whole index against you.
